IMPORTANCE OF RESTORING SMALL DECAY

composite fillings on front teeth

What is a decay?

Decay/dental caries are permanent damage in the hard surface of the tooth that develop into tiny openings or holes in the tooth. It is caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria in your mouth, frequent snacking, sipping sugary drinks and not cleaning your teeth well.

Signs and symptoms:

  • Mild to sharp pain when eating or drinking something sweet, hot or cold
  • Visible holes or pits in your teeth
  • Brown, black or white staining on any surface of a tooth
  • Pain when you bite down.

What are the types of filling/restoration for dental caries?

1.Composite filling

Composite is a white/tooth colour filling material that is used to restore form, function and aesthetic of the tooth.

  1. GIC restoration.

Glass ionomer cements (GIC) is a white coloured filling material, that will adhere to caries affected dentin(second layer of the tooth ), minimizing the amount of tooth removal required to restore the tooth. It is also used in cases of abrasion of tooth due to aggressive brushing (cervical abrasion). Glass ionomer cement can be used as a restorative material in its own right or as a base for a composite resin overlay (sandwich restoration).

  1. Sandwich technique.

In case of deep cavity that does not require root canal treatment , two fillings are given to provide form and function to the tooth. Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is used a base and composite resin is placed above the GIC.

  1. Inlay/ Onlay

Inlays are a type of indirect restoration (filling) that is used to restore extensively damaged or decayed teeth. Inlay and onlay are a form of indirect restoration , which means they are made outside of the mouth as a single, solid piece that fits the specific size and shape of the prepared cavity, and then cemented in place in the tooth. This is an alternative to an indirect restoration, made out of composite, or glass ionomer, that is built up within the mouth.

What happens if we don’t fill small cavities ?

When  decay damages a tooth, the destruction to the tooth is irreversible. If  the cavity is left untreated, the decay can spread and worsen, destroying healthy parts of the tooth.

A cavity will not heal on its own – it will only worsen.

And as it worsens, the treatment options become more extensive and expensive. Root canals and crowns are not cheap treatments, and replacing a tooth is often even more costly. By treating a cavity with a simple filling early, you can save yourself money, pain, stress, and perhaps even a tooth.

A filling can restore a damaged tooth, returning its functionality and eliminating any pain. It’s an extremely common, routine procedure.
