Why is wisdom tooth removal necessary?

What is a wisdom tooth?

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that most people get in their late teens or early twenties. Sometimes these teeth can be a valuable asset to the mouth when healthy and properly aligned, but more often, they are misaligned and require removal.

When wisdom teeth are misaligned, they may position themselves horizontally, be angled toward or away from the second molars, or be angled inward or outward. Poor alignment of wisdom teeth can crowd or damage adjacent teeth, the jawbone, or nerves.

What happens if we do not remove the wisdom tooth?

Impacted wisdom teeth are more likely to decay or to develop cavities. If the teeth are stuck in the gums, it is more difficult to reach them with your toothbrush and give them a good cleaning. Bacteria is also more likely to be trapped in the area around the wisdom teeth, especially if there is a pocket in the gums. It is also more difficult for the dentist to fill in the cavities in the wisdom teeth since they have not fully erupted. This leads gum infection or inflammation.

  • Damage to the adjacent teeth.

If the wisdom tooth pushes against the second molar, it may damage the second molar, cause caries, which may lead to pulpal involvement that can be treated only with root canal treatment or increase the risk of infection in that area. In case of severe damage to the adjacent tooth second it may require removal. The pressure on the adjacent teeth can also cause problems with crowding of the other teeth or require braces treatment to straighten other teeth.

  • Pericoronitis

Pericoronitis occurs when the wisdom teeth do not have enough room to erupt through the gums. As a result, they may only partially come through the gum, which may lead to inflammation and infection of the soft tissue around the wisdom tooth. It may cause swollen gum in the affected area, bad taste in the mouth, severe pain that can cause loss of sleep, pain when swallowing, pain radiating to the ear and head.

Wisdom Tooth Gum Infection

Preventing an impaction from occurring is not possible but keeping regular six-month dental appointments for cleaning and check-up enables us to monitor the growth and emergence of your wisdom teeth. Regularly updated dental X-rays may indicate impacted wisdom teeth before any symptoms develop.
